Hi from Finland

  • Found you all via google and I'm trying to find nice tips for trips :)

At home I'm driving V-Strom 1000 (2014) and just love blasting gravel roads, plenty here in Finland.

But why I joined? We have decided (or wife did) destination for the abroad first holiday after all this big-C, hopefully this summer.

Wife loves Outlander TV-series so all those stone circles should be found. I love smokey single malt and motorcycling. What a combination for Highlands!

So, our plan is to take plane to Inverness and rent Africa Twin or GSA and drive somewhere. Propably Isle of Skye is must but otherwise nothing specific at the moment. Would also like to see northern parts. But not planning whole NC500, daily trips will be somewhere 100-150 miles per day. Most likely rental time 6-7 days, depending flights.

Would like to hear your opinions and those nice tips what to see!

  • Welcome! Plenty of ride reports and photos to inspire you here. A week will give you a taste of what Scotland has to offer, but you'll have to be picky where you go - it's a big country jammed into a small space I always think. ^^

Are you going to base yourselves in Inverness or move around? Bear in mind that accommodation can get a bit pricey on the west coast and Skye in the summer, and one night stays can be difficult.

In addition to what you'll find on the forum, Undiscovered Scotland is a very useful resource. The NC500 is popular for good reason, but the routes across country are fantastic and often less crowded.

This is something we have to decide, moving around would be nice but if there is difficulties finding accommodation staying in Inverness and making day trips can be wise. Or combination staying 3 nights in Inverness and rest of the nights just trying to find bed.

Thanks for the link, plenty of information to dig in.

  • Basing yourself in Inverness for a few days would work - plenty of loop rides that can be done in a day from here: Gairloch, Applecross and Torridon, Lochinver, Black Isle and up the east coast, Cairngorms etc. and then maybe have some time on Skye. Skye can be hellish slow going in the summer, so if you want to explore properly it's worth being over that way when you start - it's two hours to the bridge from here.

  • Skye is good...but I'm biased.
