« on: December 11, 2018, 21:34:29 PM »
I have been on quite a few islands with the bike and car .

And my favourite so far would have to be Mull a close second is Islay, but I am always looking for more recommendations as there is 790 or so .

I’ve got so many still to visit to make a choice right now. Perhaps I need to do an ‘Isles’ trip in 2019 :)

So many choices.

I did enjoy Mull immensely.

Loved Eilean Siar.

Love skye but it's now become far too busy and crowded.

Heading for Arran, Islay and Jura in early June. Looking forward to it.

Orkney Isles in 2020.

In an opposite tack, don't bother with a visit to the Uists  :-X

For riding, the roads are pants - not much on any of the coastline, so no great views :(

The beaches have a charm about them - miles and miles and miles of white sand, with the ever present odour of rotting seaweed to keep you company :o And hoardes of sand flies in the summer when you try wild camping on the macher ::)

Just my opinion after spending too many months working over there!

I went to Harris last year and loved it. Was surprised at how quiet it was compared to other Islands, the roads were in decent nick, the scenery spectacular and the people very friendly. The roads are not to be tackled at much speed but there is a fun challenge in watching both the road and the scenery at the same time!!

Some of the open roads up on Lewis were also quite fun to ride on.

A great place for a retreat - and any trip with a 2 hour ferry ride always feels more exotic I think.

Was over on Skye on Tuesday, up past where the Three Chimneys restaurant is near Dunvegan looking at a property for my brother.  Long time since I've been up that far and it was an absolutely glorious drive, but the road deteriorated to Zambian levels the further we went- shocking.  God knows what it's like in summer;  there's a scenic loop that apparently takes 500 vehicles a day and I was worried that my (admittedly fairly low slung) car was going to get stuck in a hole.

Mainland Orkney for me.
Whilst treeless like Lewis I think the rolling nature of the Orkney landscape is much more interesting.
Orkney has loads of places to visit and if you plan it right you can avoid the cruise boat buses.
The roads were in excellent condition.

Arran for me, as there is lots do do and the north and south of the island are so different. There are a decent amount of roads, so it is worth going there for a drive/ride.

Many islands take ages to get there and then you can round them in an hour or so!
